What to know for the exam
- check_circleIsosorbide mononitrate is the long-acting nitrate taken on a schedule, not for sudden attacks.
- check_circleNitrates need a daily nitrate-free interval so the body doesn't stop responding.
- check_circleClonidine is also available as a weekly patch.
- check_circleHydralazine is often paired with a nitrate in heart failure.
Nitrates plus a PDE5 inhibitor such as sildenafil can drop blood pressure dangerously. That combination is contraindicated.
The nitrate and PDE5 interaction is a standard patient-safety item.
